Exclusive Interview : Gennaro Esposito

Tell us a bit about your musical history.

Italy. New York. Paris. Madrid. From my university studies at the Conservatory to Master Classes with jazz/fusion, pop and gypsy musicians in multiple countries, I have tried to combine different techniques and styles because I have always believed that music is a global language. Training in classical, flamenco, folk, rock, jazz, and more – across 2 continents – forms the basis of the rhythm and melodies behind my sound.

What projects are you working on now?

I’m in the process of my second CD that reflects my experience here in NYC and includes talent from both the US and abroad. Other projects I am involved in now include a new CD with an R&B/Jazz singer, playing classic funk with a 13-piece band, and performing original rock music with a local rock band. Collaborations aside, I produce curated pieces for independent filmmakers and am in production for a video series launching in 2014 called “Fashion Compliance.”

Gennaro-Dr-J_1000x714What role does music education play in your career?

Ongoing music education is an integral part of my professional career and musical evolution. Having discovered a way to make this fun, I spend countless hours each week fine tuning my tone, learning new materials, and identifying up and coming artists.

What do you think of the current state of the music industry?

Technology’s impact on the music industry requires musicians to be in a state of constant adaptation. Producing and marketing with an understanding of the current marketplace for music is integral to success within the music industry today.

Why do you use Mooer pedals?

From the gig bag to the pedal board, Uptown to Downtown, being a musician in NYC means Mooer pedals are a key element of my gear. Not only because of the conveniently small size but also because of the rich tone it puts out without any compromise.

The Compdriver : New from Dr J!

ThDr J CompDrivere “COMPDRIVER” is a signature pedal of Dr J endorsee, Jose de Castro. This new Dr J pedal combines an overdrive and a compressor effect. With the two 2-way switches you can control the position of the compressor (before or after the overdrive), or you can turn it off. The tone of the overdrive was sculpted with Jose’s input. The overdrive is very clear and rises above your band when you kick it in!

Osiamo Dealer Spotlight : BestBassGear.com

MAXZAK

Managing Director Max Kay with Osiamo Endorsee Zak Loy of Alpha Rev. (look out for a feature on guitarist Zak Loy in a future blogisode)

I opened http://www.BestBassGear.com as dealer of Osiamo product in the 2012. After speaking with Max via vis the the phone for many months I finally got a chance to meet him at the 2013 Winner NAMM show. Max is a great luthier/builder/repair guy and bassist! as well I promised to buy him a beer but I’m pretty sure he paid for it. Max I owe you another beer! – rr

How long have you guys been in business?

11 Years.

What Osiamo product do you carry and why?

Taurus Abigar MultiDrive SLTaurus pedals
The Taurus overdrive is the richest, most harmonically pure I have ever heard. After hearing the demo I didn’t want to give the pedal back. All the Taurus pedals are phenomenal.

rockready ultrastrap 3.5

Ultrastrap
When I injured my left shoulder I could barley wear a bass until I got my Ultrastrap. My guitar player that has a bad back wanted to try it and he refused to gave it back, so I had to get another. The clever Neoprene and shock-banding construction make it the perfect prescription for a bad shoulder or back. It makes my bass feel 3 pounds lighter compared to a traditional bass strap.

(ed. note : now the Rockready Ultrastrap)

R.Cocco
RCocco strings are descendents of a string making family legacy in Italy that sold strings to Stradivarius, the greatest luthier of all time. String to string consistency is good and the sets are well balanced in tone, timbre, tension and feel.

What does the future hold in store for BBG?

We are doubling up our effort to stock hard to find parts for basses. When you need a less common bass part we will be ready for you.

Wally Hustin Interview

For those of us that aren’t hip, tell us why they call you the ‘workingest’ bassist in Chicago?
Back in the 80’s I toured with Dave Mason and gigged with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John Denver and Phoebe Snow to name a few. Plus a lot of session work in Chicago when there was session work in town.

What’s happening now for you?
I was was hired recently by DEACON BLUES, they’re America’s premier Steely Dan tribute experience. The group began when eleven Chicago-area studio and stage musicians agreed to form a jazz-rock vehicle to honor the music of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.

What role does education play in music?
Now more than ever education has to be about the Music Business. Can you understand the contracts you sign etc.. When I was young I was touring at 17 so I didn’t get the Music Business savvy side of things. I learned on the job. You gotta be prepared for so much. Learning to be fluent in different styles of music, to read music, to be courteous and on time. That’s all part of it. You gotta learn how not to get taken advantage of.

Where do you see the future of music going?
I hope we’ll get back to real music. There’s so much sampling going on. Kids today don’t know the original artists. There are some great new artists out now like Esperanza Spalding. As long as people continue to enjoy music the sky’s the limit for music.

What do you like about your Volo gig bag?
I just put my bag to work this past weekend! And I’m already hawking the bag to everyone I run into! I even threw my bag across the stage to show them the protection it gives! Best part is I have a Sadowsky bass in the bag!! They say I’m crazy but they now know this bag is the bag they want!!

I’m very impressed with my bass bag and all the features it has!! There seems to be pockets in the pockets for storage of all your cords, tuners, strings, effects, my iPad, phone, keys, etc… I could go on and on!! I’m just talking about the mini bag! Plus the storage in the bass bag!! This sounds like a commercial to me!! Ha!! And it glows in the dark!!! The bag will sell itself ! Great job on the bags, Ed!!! It’s like having a hard shell case only lighter and you can strap it to your back to get to the gigs!!

“Best bag I’ve seen in years!!! Good luck keeping these in stock!!”
