Nate Lopez Mooer Pedal Board Demo by Neal Walter

This week Neal takes a look at some of Nate Lopez’ favorite Mooer pedals. Neal puts together the Soul Shiver, Trelicopter, Ninety Orange, Shimverb, and throws in the Micro Looper so you can the various effects in an impromtu composition of Neal’s. We were joking with Neal that he needed the Micro Looper to replicate Nate’s 8 string playing.

Nate Lopez and his 8 Strings

Nate Lopez came to our attention through EMGtv on YouTube. He was already using several Mooer pedals in his pedal board and we hooked him with a Soul Shiver pedal!

He has some big fans out in the Bay area and was nominated this summer for best jazz artist in the North Bay at www.bohemian.com.

Some accolades…

“You will note this 7 and 8 String guitarist uses every aspect of the guitar to play bass, rhythm and lead making him a one man band.” – Positively Petaluma

“To Say Nate Lopez just plays guitar is an understatement.” – Curtis Kim KSRO

Nate Lopez writes full arrangements for his 7 and 8 strings guitars. In addition to his jazz, funk, blues inspired originals, Nate specializes in instrumental arrangements of popular classics by groups from Fleetwood Mac, Bob Marley, to Daft Punk. Says Nate, “the extended range of my 7 and 8 string guitars allow me to play the bass, chords, and melody simultaneously. This gives me complete control of the music.”

Nate has been playing all over California for over a decade at many venues including recently Earthfest L.A., Winter NAMM, The Catalyst Club in Santa Cruz, Laguna Beach Jazz and Art Festival, Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, Reno Jazz festival, and countless wineries.

He is also been a featured artist on radio stations KRSH, KBBF, KVYN and KGGV. Here is on on EMGtv:

Nate studied Jazz and Classical music at Solano College, then went on to study North Indian Classical Music at the Ali Akbar College of music. Over the years, Nate has acquired a broad array of musical interests and skills, and is always exploring different sounds and experiences!

Exclusive Interview : Joao Castilho

Tell us about your musical background
I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, in 1970, and started playing at age of 9. During my musical life, I’ve played with many great artists like Maria Bethânia, Djavan, Lisa Nilsson, Ed Motta, Sandra de Sá, Simone, Eumir Deodato, Zé Renato, Leny Andrade, Nana and Dori Caymmi, Pascoal Meirelles, among several others. In terms of education, from 15 to 18 years old, I had private lessons of acoustic and electric guitar. Since then I became autodidact, but at 2007 I had the chance to study harmony in a revolutionary way for 3 years with the trombone player Vittor Santos.

I released two solo CDs called “Equilibrium” and “Percepções” (you can check them at Spotfy). I also released two books: “Toque Junto” and “EstudandoImprovisação.” With the bass player Jefferson Lescowich, the drummer Renato Massa and the saxophone player Marcelo Martins, I formed the group FOCO, with two CDs released: “FOCO” and “Tempo Bom com Chuva”.

joaoCastilhoWhat are you working on now?
Right now I’m back to Djavan’s band. We just finished recording his last album. Also, I’ve been playing with Nana Caymmi among other artists, and composing music for TV shows, films and publicity.

What is the role of education in music?
If you are talented but have no music theory education, you will never know how far you could get.

How do you feel about the current ‘state of the music industry’?
Things are changing fast, especially for recording industry. The streaming market is forcing an adaptation of this segment, which is affecting other music businesses in different ways, such as concerts, film score, composers, etc.. Let’s see where it goes… We, as musicians, producers, composers, should be prepared to adapt.

Why do use Pickboy picks and Mooer pedals?
I’ve always liked Pickboy picks very much. Great quality, big variety of materials and lots of different shapes. About Mooer, they sound great, are small and light, which is everything I am looking for. Click here to learn more about Joao’s gear.

Exclusive Interview with Mooer Artist Tommy Bolan

Tommy Bolan Mooer Pure Octave Eleclady LoFi

For those of us who aren’t hip give a us a brief background on you?

I am probably best known as the lead guitarist of the German heavy metal band “WARLOCK” (with Doro Pesch). I played on and did the World Tour and video for the Platinum/Gold selling Album “Triumph and Agony.”

What are you doing musically present?

I have my own band that I front called, N.Y.C (I sing lead vocals and play lead guitar), and I am also the lead guitarist of The Richie Ramone Band (original drummer of Ramones). I also sing lead vocals on many Ramones classics in our live show.

What’s coming up for you in the future?

A World Tour in support of the new Richie Ramone Band CD coming out called “Entitled.” It was mixed by Mark Needham (Pink, Killers, etc) and mastered by Stephen Marcussen (Prince, Stones, etc). I co-wrote on the disc as well. I am aslo writing the NEW NYC CD that is set to be produced by Grammy Nominated Producer Ulrich Wild (Static-X, Zombie, Otep, etc).

What do you think of the state of the music industry?

It has gotten tougher, as the industry has “splintered” in so many directions as far as A/R and actual labels and the way they sign bands now or even consider them.

Why do you use Mooer pedals?

Small size, BIG sound and pedal board friendly.

These little Mooer micro pedals are gaining BIG market share. More and more consumers arrive at the booth already aware of the Mooer product line. The Mooer Little Monster AC 5 watt, class A, all tube amp was also very well received.

We look forward to our next regional show at Valley Forge, PA in Nov.

Check out the YouTube video and hear the Ninety Orange, Blues Crab, Eleclady, Pure Boost, Rage Machine, Reecho, Trelicopter and a Hustle Drive/Ninety Orange combo.
